KiD CuDi – Cleveland is the Reason
Produced by Dot Da Genius
the kind of beat born from late nights in front of the computer screen.
never been to Cleveland, but KiD CuDi and the dood singing on the chorus (anyone know who that is?) make it sound intergalactic-fantastic.
check out the rest of his mixtape, free download on his site and completely diggable.
especially noteworthy:
Day n Nite
Is there Any Love? (feat Wale)
The Prayer
Heaven at Nite
and the Paul Simon sample in 50 Ways to Make a Record cracks me up

Summer’s winding down, but you can still stir the ice in your mojito to this previously unreleased Lupe-worked Kanye beat. The sample seems to be based on the 1969 Lennon-McCartney b-side, “Don’t Let me Down,” sped up (whirrr’d), sprinkled with a faint tinkling ringaling and driven by some beatbombs dropped in true Ye fashion.
enjoy the last days of summer, folks.

I&I Djangdan
The music scene in Seoul is notoriously lacking, but last night I went to a stellar performance by I&I Djangdan at Club Cargo, a cozy underground lounge in Hongdae. Korean soused-siren-singing with slick melodica, bass and drummed out dj-ing make for a surprisingly groovy combination that had the crowd swaying and bopping all night. I believe a few of the members are of the Korea reggae group Windy City, who will be performing at the Pentaport Rock Festival (July 25-27) with Ozomatli. Love love love the melodica man…I can still hear the haunting melodies echoing through my body.
aaaaaaand I can’t seem to get the youtube video to embed properly, so here are a few links–one click and you’re in a whole new world of groovetastica, so go go go!

it’s monsoon season in Seoul right now, maybe a bit on the waning side of things but that only means more hellish-humidity-with-no-rainstorm-relief-in-sight kinda weather, which makes proper professional gear all the more stifling and utterly unbearable.
the only thing that’s getting me through the day is my digital gang of soul-swangin summer-stoop hangin ladies.

Estelle: does she really need an introduction? mayhap, daymap. She’s one more o’ dem London exports sportin the UK bawl and sassafrass. You might’ve heard her single with Kanye, “American Boy,” the original version of which I’ve never heard but of all the katrillions of remixes out there, the MR GASPAR ditty is all you’ll wanna hear. Faith like Evans, believe.

Nowadays, I’m head-over-heels-ing for her song, “No Substitute Love” and “Magnificent.” I have a stupid habit of not connecting titles to lyrics, so for the longest time I thought the chorus in “No Substitute Love” was saying, “I’m not your prostitute lover, Ohh noooo.” The message seems to be the same, though.

Little Jackie is also one of dem sexy sirens who make you forget the heat but still bring on the swoon. She’s been getting compared to Amy Winehouse, but that means nothing nowadays–seems like you just need to have a bit of character, a lot of hair and swagger in rhythm to be tagged as the next queen of poprock candy ie snap, CRACKle, bop. I just dig her highly digestible sound bites: “There’s only one me in the galaxy/I am an endangered species/This kind of flower doesn’t grow on earth/Just lettin ya know for what it’s worth”–it’s almost like she’s spittin some Little Prince philosophy right thurrr. She’s certainly tamed me.

Bjork is one crazy chick. Her music videos always leave me feeling a bit disturbed, something about her eerily porcelain child-alien features and spastic moves. Her video for “Wanderlust” has a Where the Wild Things Are vibe, and the part where she flips around with the creature man in her backpack tickles me, half amusement, half horror. I love the old school feel they achieve with 3d animation, and the costume designing process is just incredible–check it out in the making of video. spotted via shape+color

Last term, I took a class in Electro-Acoustic Music Composition and quickly realized that
a) there really is Music Potential in all sonic colorations found in the quotidian chaos/calm of your life
b) it’s BUTT HARD to tap that potential
c) my butt is not that hard.
Given that an increasing amount of our daily existence is spent in front of a glowing screen of 1s and 0s branded with either the Gated primary color box or Jobsian original sin card, it’s not surprising that the dings, rings and pings of our favorite rival operating systems found their way into symphonic reorchestrations. I’m a Mac kid myself, but I think on this melodic battleground, I just might have to grab the Windows seat. Who do you think flipped it better?

Whistling Jack Smith – I Was Kaiser Bill’s Batman (1967)
Whistling has gotta be one of the most pleasing things to listen to and do, and the whistle work in this ditty is enough whimsical loveplay of intertwining soular wind to leave you breathless and panting fo mo. I can’t place where I’ve heard this song before, but it’s instantly familiar and catchy (symptomatic of all whistled tunes?). Does anyone know if it’d been featured in anything recently–remix, mash-up, commercial?
Anyway, this video is ticklish. Billy Moeller is the groovy goofilicious-Richard-Gere-lookalike face of Whistling Jack Smith–the actual lead whistler on the track is recording producer Noel Walker, backed up by the Mike Sammes Singers who most notably appear HooHeeHa and Oompa loompa-ing at the end of The Beatles’ “I Am the Walrus.” I wonder if they’re the fuzzy creatures and white humanpillar in the video. I also wonder how many drugs they’re all on while shooting. Six, maybe.

Ronald Jenkees is not an autistic savant, he just happens to be sick with the music and likes to wax goofilogical. I know, I know, Acoustic Savant is all wrong too considering he makes his sounds electronically, but forgive and forget the ironic pun and just check out the dude’s powers of production (and taste that jam!).

M’s last post on Souls of Mischief got this little bitty stuck in my head. DJ Benzi refixes 93 til Infinity with two of the CRS team to turn the already catchy tune into an infectious pop disease! Kanye’s singular voice cuts right into the smooth beats over which Pharrell’s silky falsetto coasts, a spicy combination that adds dynamic flavor to the original. YUM have a listen!

Kutiman feat Karolina – Music is Ruling My World (2007)
1. That afro-feline girl is unreal, like a hieroglyphic statue.
2. Atop Mt. Garbaggio, does the dude reach up to puff a cig or plug his pug?
3. The way Karolina sings that fadeaway shot at the end of each chorus line…true hooker.
4. Who expected such groovy, afrobeat funkadilly to come out of Israel? Not me, which shows once again that expectations are better left unheld.
